The elders are the shepherds (pastors) of Grace Church, responsible for the oversight of the members (1 Peter 5:1-3). To be qualified as an elder one must be a man of deep faith and godly character, as well as able to teach the scriptures (1 Timothy 3:1-7). Being an elder is a high and holy calling that we take very seriously. Each elder goes through a long process of discernment where they are measured for the role by the example of their life and their understanding of God's Word. Ultimately Christ is the lead shepherd or pastor of the church, and this council of men serve under his authority.
"So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock." - 1 Peter 5:1-3
